It was taken at Londolozi Game Reserve in South Africa. The sun had already disappeared and the rich, deep sky had overtaken this quiet land. I was with a scout in a four-wheel drive Land Rover when I saw the tree, and it looked to me that there was a tongue coming out of the trunk. It looked like a dragon. I was concerned about the silence and the animals I could not see. I used a 14mm lens and I took this photograph from about 2 feet away from the tree. I exposed for the sky. As I was taking this photograph the scout said to me, “Marc, get into the car immediately. There are two lions about 150 yards away and they are moving toward us.” If I wasn’t with a scout, I am not sure that this image would ever have been in the book.
