It wasn’t like working the normal six to twelve hours as a photographer creating images. This was a place that never slept. So, every time I would be ready to stop, something new would happen. At about 10:15 one night I saw these beautiful horses on the other side of the highway, about 150 feet away. I put the 500mm lens with a slow film on a tripod at the widest aperture, and panned the camera in the direction the horses were running to create the greatest sensation of movement. When I looked into the camera, I was very concerned I was shooting at a shutter speed of 1/15 of second, because I wanted to make sure that a photograph could be taken that would represent this movement and this freedom, and still be clear enough.
