We had planned to go to Seattle to take photographs because he told me that he wanted to go with me on one of my field trips before he died. I went out and visited with him, but unfortunately, he was too sick to travel with me. So, I changed my plans and went my friend Simon Baitler to Colorado to photograph the Aspens. He had business to tend to, so I went to Rocky Mountain National Park myself. On the way back, at nine in the evening, I saw this beautiful purple sky and trees on a hill in the distance. There was very little light and I used a tripod and a self-timer to minimize camera shake. I used a 500mm lens at f8 and my estimate is that the exposure was about 10 seconds. I am still frequently amazed at how the human eye filters colors and how we donít always see as much as the camera and film. I dedicate this photograph to the memory of Dick Eskoff, whose spirit and friendship were with me when I took this photo and will be with me as long as I live.
