Hippos in Late Afternoon Light
Before I went to Botswana, I had no knowledge of how vicious and dangerous hippos can be. Apparently they can run 35 miles per hour on land and kill more people than any other animal in Africa. They certainly look friendly and playful from a distance. Because I can only run 33 miles per hour and a weigh 6 pounds less than the average hippo, I decided to proceed with caution. I used a 400mm DO IS canon lens with a 2x extender on a monopod and photographed this at f8 at 1/60 of a second on Ektachrome 200ASA.
